Nationwide Series to race at Iowa Speedway (AP)

The Iowa Speedway in Newton will host a NASCAR Nationwide Series race next season. Track officials announced Tuesday that the 250-lap race will be held Aug. 1. Landing a Nationwide Series race is a major coup for the track, which was designed by Rusty Wallace. The yet-to-be named race is the second from a major circuit on the track’s 2009 schedule, joining the Indy Racing League’s Iowa 250.

Dixon to race in ALMS at Atlanta (AP)

Indianapolis 500 winner and IndyCar Series points leader Scott Dixon will team with former Indy winner Gil de Ferran in the 10-hour Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on Oct. 4. It’s the 10th race this season in the American Le Mans Series and will be Dixon’s first Petit Le Mans since 1999. Dixon, going for his second IndyCar championship, has won six races this season for Ganassi Racing.

Racer dies at Grattan Raceway in N. Kent County (AP)

A 72-year-old racer has died in an accident at the Grattan Raceway in northern Kent County. WOOD-TV said about 2,000 spectators watched Saturday when Jack Drews lost control in a turn at 110 mph and crashed into an embankment. Drews, from western Illinois, was driving his 1961 Triumph when he drove straight off the track and crashed.
